Some people exercise because it’s what people or society expects of them, or simply because it’s the in thing to do. I have a love hate relationship with exercise, but I’ve come to realise that it’s only really good for you when you actually want do it for all the right reasons.
There are people that are addicted to exercise, and not in a good way, and it consumes their lives. Then there is me… I do it when I feel like it or when I enjoy it and I don’t let other people make me feel good or bad about my decisions.
Exercise is a celebration of what your body can do. Not a punishment for what you ate.
I’ve been one of those people that join the gym, go for a month and then don’t go, and basically throw my money away. But no more of that nonsense for me. Four months ago I cancelled my gym membership, primarily due to COVID, and I don’t think I’ll ever go back, well not in the short to medium term anyway.
Although I’m not at the gym anymore, I feel like I have been more active these last four months than I have in the last 12-18 months. I’m walking more, and practicing being mindful, and it feels great!
The only other thing that is different is we now have an exercise bike at home. Now let’s get real, it’s not like I’m doing 40km cycles at a time, but I’m getting the value from it. I’m more of a sprint girl, maybe 10 mins here and there of high intensity cycling, and then when I’m really serious I’ll do a 20km session.
Some of you maybe thinking, that’s not much, but it’s working for me and I feel better than what I did when I was going to the gym. So I’ll keep on keeping on and not be so hard on myself!
